Restoring your dental health with precision and care

Understanding root canal treatment

Root canal therapy, commonly referred to as endodontic treatment, addresses issues related to inflammation or infection inside the tooth. It’s a procedure designed to save your tooth by removing the damaged pulp, cleaning the root canals, and sealing the space.

Contrary to popular belief, this treatment is not painful. In fact, it is meant to alleviate the pain caused by infection. Without proper treatment, you risk severe infection, swelling, bone loss, and potential tooth loss. Preserving your natural teeth through root canal therapy is typically the best course of action for maintaining overall oral function and health.

Our Unique Approach

Our goal is to preserve your natural dentition, maintain your oral health, and ensure a smooth, comfortable experience throughout your treatment journey.

Advanced technology:
How CBCT enhances diagnosis

We believe in the power of state-of-the-art technology. The CBCT scan (cone beam computed tomography) provides a three-dimensional view of the tooth and surrounding bone structures, which greatly improves diagnostic accuracy. This advanced imaging allows us to detect complications like hidden canals or fractures, contributing to better treatment outcomes. With CBCT, we can determine the best approach to your care while minimizing unnecessary procedures.

Answers to your questions about root canals

What is root canal therapy, and why do I need it?

Root canal therapy is a specialized procedure designed to save your tooth by treating an infection or inflammation in the tooth’s pulp. This treatment helps prevent further complications such as pain, swelling, or even tooth loss. While some may fear the procedure, it’s essential to preserve your natural teeth whenever possible to ensure long-term oral health.

How do I know if I need a root canal?

Symptoms indicating you may need a root canal include lingering sensitivity to heat or cold, persistent toothaches, swelling, or discomfort when chewing. However, some people may not show symptoms at all. If your dentist has recommended a root canal or if you’re experiencing any of these issues, it’s crucial to seek an evaluation to avoid future complications.

How long does the procedure take? Will it be completed in one visit?

The duration of a root canal procedure can range from 30 to 90 minutes, depending on the complexity of the case. In most instances, the procedure can be completed in a single visit. However, more complex cases may require two or more visits. We sometimes use intracanal medicaments, such as calcium hydroxide, to eliminate bacteria, which necessitates a follow-up appointment to ensure full recovery.

Will the treatment be painful?

We utilize specialized and gentle numbing techniques to ensure painless anesthetic injections while achieving effective anesthesia. Your comfort and assurance of a pain-free experience are our utmost priorities throughout the procedure. Many patients are pleasantly surprised by the absence of pain during treatment. The effects of the anesthesia typically last 2-3 hours after the procedure, offering extended relief.

What should I expect during recovery?

After a root canal, you may experience mild discomfort or sensitivity, especially when chewing, but this is usually manageable with over-the-counter pain medications like Tylenol or Advil (Motrin). In cases of severe prior infection, chewing discomfort might last a few days but will gradually subside. Most patients return to their normal activities immediately after the procedure, and it is rare for patients to need prescription painkillers.

I’m nervous about the procedure. What are my options?

We understand that the idea of a root canal can cause anxiety for many patients. While most root canals can be performed without additional sedation, we offer nitrous oxide (laughing gas) and oral sedation to help you relax during the procedure. For patients with extreme dental anxiety, we also provide IV sedation in collaboration with our partner anesthesiologist, ensuring a completely comfortable experience.
